Dreaming Sun: The Extra Door
I have someone who loves me, Zen thinks. He turns as someone calls his name. It's Saeko. She wants to know if they can go to the portable classroom together. It's okay with Zen and he offers to carry the dictionary for her. She says that it's heavy, but it doesn't bother him. Saeko happily thanks him and he smiles and thinks that she always looks happy. Zen realizes that the dictionary is pretty heavy and struggles to carry it. He wonders why he didn't fall in love with Saeko. Someone else calls his name, and Zen blushes as he turns to look. It's Shimana. He starts to ask her what she wants, while thinking why did he fall in love with her. Shimana grins and tells him never mind. Zen is aggravated and asks what that was all about. Saeko calls her name as Shimana turns away not wanting to bother them. Shimana tells Zen to treat Saeko nicely and do things like carrying heavy books for her. He shouts that he's doing that right now and wants to know what she wanted. Shimana makes a face at him and says that it's nothing. He knows that Shimana is trying to push him and Saeko together. Saeko laughs at Shimana's face and exclaims that she's cute. Zen again wonders why he fell in love with Shimana and wants her to stop meddling. Of course he would rather be with Shimana than Saeko. He realizes that he still hasn't given up on Shimana. Why is he so happy to hear her call his name? Is he her dog? Zen drops to the floor in disgust as Saeko asks him if the dictionary is too heavy. Dumbass! He thinks to himself. I'm supposed to change! I need to forget about her! I need to move forward! Saeko asks him if he wants to eat lunch together. He says sure, he will eat lunch with her everyday for many years. Saeko happily asks him if that's true and will he be her husband? Zen looks amused and thinks that Saeko has a gentle smile.
Zen and Saeko are happily eating lunch together. Saeko blushes as she tries to ask Zen a question. She wants to know what his favorite foods are. He's a little surprised so she apologizes for asking him a weird question. She's nervous. Zen thinks that she's trying hard to find things to talk about and he's good at putting people at ease, so he tells her that he likes sweet things and eats them a lot. Recently he's starting liking cream puffs. Saeko happily replies that cream puffs are her favorite. Surprised, he also says that he likes cookies with chocolate, like a panda. Saeko also likes that kind of cookie. Zen then tells her that he really likes fried food. Saeko gives him a big smile and says that she has some in her lunchbox. She hold out a fork with a piece and asks him if he wants to try it. Zen blushes and wonder if it's okay. Saeko blushes too and tells him that it is. Both are kind of nervous. All of a sudden, a group of Saeko's fans show up calling her name and wanting to know what she's eating today. They think she looks really cute. They ask who's the dog sitting next to her. Zen is miffed about being called a dog. Saeko yells that they're disgusting and should go away. The guys are shocked and Zen laughs to himself thinking they're going to run away. However, the guys are excited that she yelled at them and think her angry face is cute. They want to make her more angry because they're masochists. Saeko looks perturbed as they ask her if she will get mad at them for calling her by her first name. With an evil look, Zen answers for her that he will get mad and don't call her "Saeko". Saeko looks at him in surprise as he tells her that they should go somewhere else since it's noisy. Zen wonders why he's trying to show off, but he's irritated that they want to make her angry and thinks that the landlord would be able to chase them off (with just a look) if he were in the same situation. Zen, grabbing Saeko's hand, apologizes and dashes off, while the group of guys angrily yell after him. Zen thinks that he's not cool, but Saeko looks happy. Zen asks her why she's so mean to guys and she tells him that her dad told her to act that way ever since she was little. Zen says that her dad just worries about her but she thinks it's really annoying. Saeko tells him that he's different though. Zen glances at her. She won't be like that with the person she likes. She gives him a big smile as he thinks that no matter what he does, she's always happy with him while he's always been desparately trying to make Shimana happy.
At the house, Asahi tells Shimana that there was phone call from the landlord. Shimana, sitting next to Zen by the Christmas tree, looks up happily in anticipation. Asahi says that the landlord won't be able to return home for Christmas, and both Shimana and Zen look shocked. Shimana is sad but Zen thinks that he shouldn't try and comfort her anymore because Shimana is with the landlord. Plus if he does something tactless, the landlord will kill him. He's going to leave it be! However, when he sees Shimana walking dejectedly in front of him, he can't leave her alone. He asks why is she acting so down. Shimana replies that she's not feeling down, she's feeling good. Zen tells her that he will treat her to 100 yen hamburgers, but she says not to worry about her and go to Saeko. He tells her that he can't leave her alone. Shimana tells him that she will be happier if he leaves her alone and gets along well with Saeko. Zen looking irritated, tells her "fine!", and walks away.
At the hamburger place, Saeko tells Zen that she thinks Shimana is acting like that for his sake, so he can move forward. Zen looks thoughtful. Shimana is acting more cold towards him on purpose. She's making him angry on purpose. She's making ugly faces at him on purpose. He knows that it's all for his sake, but... Saeko tells him that she knows even if he wants to answer, he can't, and that he's heartbroken. Zen looks down with a tear in his eye, and tells her, "yeah." Saeko looks at him sadly. Zen thinks that he knows all this already and if it continues, he will lose Saeko too. Zen laughs a little and says that he's uncool and cries too easily. Saeko thinks he's crazy and says that he's the coolest guy ever, as she wipes his face. Zen thinks that when he's with Saeko, there are no painful feelings and he feels all warm inside. Shimana is cold, and when they're together, it's painful. Plus she makes ugly faces. Zen thanks Saeko and tells her that he will walk her home.
At her house, Saeko asks Zen if he has plans for Christmas Eve. He tells her that they're having a party at his house and then invites her to come. She looks surprised and wonders if it's okay. He says that there will be people there who she doesn't know, but if it's fine with her... She happily says that she will definitely go. Zen smiles back at first and then his face changes to shock. Saeko's dad opens the door with an evil look on his face. He creepily welcomes her home. Zen finds out that the scary guy is her dad. Saeko wants to know what her dad is doing home so early. She shouts at him not to watch and that he's annoying. She yells for her mom. Her dad puts his arm around Zen and accuses him of being overly familiar with Saeko. Zen apologizes. Her dad goes on to say that Zen is standing too close to Saeko. He needs to be at least 1 meter away. Her dad scarily asks if Zen understands, while Saeko wants to know what he's talking to Zen about. Her dad tells Saeko that he also wants to talk to her while she argues with him. The door slams as they go into the house, leaving Zen outside, looking terrified and sweating profusely. Saeko's dad reminds Zen of the landlord's dad, but he hopes that since it's Saeko's dad, he will be nice like Saeko. Zen is looking forward to Christmas Eve.
At school, Zen excitedly tells Saeko that the Christmas party starts at 7 PM tomorrow so he will pick her up around 6 PM. Saeko, with her back to him, says that she will be waiting for him. Zen stops to look at her and exclaims that even Saeko is avoiding him now. She denies it, while still turned away. He grabs her shoulder and shouts at her to tell him what's wrong. She turns to look at him with a dejected look on her face. He notices that her eyes are swollen and wonders if she's been crying. She tells him that she fought with her dad, and he knows that it's because of him. Zen apologizes and asks Saeko to tell her dad that he doesn't have to worry, Zen won't get close to Saeko. She looks at him in surprise and Zen mentions the 1 meter rule. Saeko doesn't want that, and Zen doesn't want to make her mad either. He starts to walk away, but she tells him not to listen to her dad and grabs him from behind. Saeko clings to Zen and pleads with him. Zen is frozen in shock. Saeko, realizing what she's doing, pushes him away and apologizes. Both of them are blushing. Saeko runs off as Zen stands there, thinking that he gets it and she's not happy. He wonders what he should get her for a Christmas present. He wants to get her something that will make her really happy.
Zen rings the doorbell at Saeko's house. She comes out to see him and he notices that she doesn't look happy. Saeko apologizes and says that she can't go to the party. Her dad told her no. Zen wonders why it's like this when she's the one who told him not to listen to what her dad says. She gives him a present and tells him to open it later during vacation. She goes back into the house, leaving Zen standing outside. He realizes that they're not going to see each other during the winter break. Saeko's dad asks her if Zen has left. Saeko, crying, doesn't answer him. Her dad looks a little worried. Saeko's mom grabs him and yells at him for making Saeko cry. Her dad says that he's the one who feels like crying. Saeko used to tell him that she liked him the best. He feed her, carried her, took care of her. He'd be damned if he's going to hand her over to some clueless kid. Her mom tells him to think about what would make Saeko the most happy.
Zen is wondering how Saeko is doing. He really wants to see her, really wants to be with her. He wonders why it's always like this for him. He opens Saeko's present and it's cream puffs with panda decorations. Saeko remembered their conversation at lunch about what he likes to eat. Zen can't believe she made them for him since they're hard to make. He eats one. It's delicious! He makes up his mind. It's okay if he's rejected, in pain, and uncool. He just doesn't want Saeko to have sad memories. He knows what will make Saeko the most happy! At Saeko's house, her dad opens the door as Zen yells out, "I've come to pick up Saeko! I think Saeko has been crying because she was excited about today. And me too! I think it's really fun when we're together! I want Saeko to be happy today! So I came to pick her up!" Saeko, crying, can hear Zen. Her dad gives in and tells Zen that her curfew is 10 PM. Zen stares at him. He can't believe it and happily calls for Saeko. Saeko has a huge smile on her face. Zen thinks that seeing Saeko's smile makes him happy. He likes her. Maybe he's liked her for awhile. Zen sees the landlord on the street and asks him what he's doing since he said he wouldn't be returning. The landlord replies that he was let go early, so he immediately got on a plane to make it back. Zen says that he probably wants to use his appearance as a surprise present for Shimana. The landlord looks sheepish. The landlord tells Zen that it looks like he's doing well and gives Zen money so he and Saeko can get something to eat. As Zen and Saeko are walking, she pulls out a bunch of handwarmers from her pocket. Her dad put them in there for her. Zen smiles and says that maybe her dad is trying to get in the way and this is a form of protection. Saeko is confused by his comment. Zen grabs her hand and says that it could be protection from something like this. He tells her that he has her present at the house. She's happy about it. He comments that he can't win against her present though.
