Junjou Drop - Chapter 3
The chapter opens with Kokona showing Akai two drawings, one of herself and one of Akai. She asks Akai to draw something too. He tells her that he's bad at drawing but she doesn't mind. Akai seems thoughtful and ends up drawing a picture of a girl's face. Kokona recognizes the drawing and says that it's Masaki's sister, Saki. Akai appears a little surprised that Kokona got it right. Kokona smiles at him and says she heard that Saki told him that she likes him. Kokona's mom happens to overhear that as she walks by and is shocked. Kokona's mom asks Akai if that's really true and he replies, "...yeah." She wants to know what his response was. He says that he told Saki he understood. Kokona's mom is confused by that answer, so he explains that it's because Saki asked him not to forget. Kokona's mom wants to know what else he said and Akai is confused by that. She then asks him if he's an idiot. Surprised, Kokona questions if Akai really is an idiot as Akai looks perturbed. Walking to school, Akai wonders if he is an idiot. Saki is talking to her friends when she notices him. She gives him a big smile and tells him good morning. He responds back. Her friends watch the two of them interact and wonder what's going on, are they dating? Saki tells them that isn't the case. Right now she's fine with the fact that he knows she likes him and she will try her best to get him to like her. Meanwhile, Akai thinks to himself that it would be best if he could give some kind of answer back to Saki.
Saki and Akai are sitting on the park bench. Masaki asks for a piece of candy and Saki gets one for him. She asks if Kokona want one too, which Kokona does. While Akai is thinking about what kind of answer to give her, Saki turns to him and asks if he also wants candy. He does, so she hands him a piece. He thinks that until now, he has never been liked by a girl and has never been given candy either. He's not sure what to do in this current situation. He puts the candy into his mouth, chews it, and then makes a sour face. Both Saki and Akai look at each other and say "sour". The candy is lemon-flavored. Akai doesn't know what to do but he knows that it's not about having sour faces together. At school, Akai is standing near a vase of flowers. He looks over as the door opens and it's Saki who exclaims that he showed up early for school today. He asks if those are flowers from her family's shop and she concurs. She just changed out the flowers and came back with a napkin to wipe the water that had spilled. As she wipes the water, she accidently bumps the vase and it starts to wobble. Both Saki and Akai look startled. They both grab for the vase and end up touching hands. Saki blushes and apologizes. Akai tells her that it's fine. He remembers that the first time he talked to Saki was also in the classroom during the morning. He recalls Saki bumping into and spilling water all over him. He watches as Aoyama walks by with friends and thinks about how Saki fell in love with Aoyama's good character. He then wonders if choosing him next is a good thing and what made her decide on him.
Akai stops walking and notices that a guy is getting harrassed by two other guys. The guy looks frightened and keeps apologizing to the other guys. Akai tells one of the mean guys that the other guy apologized already so isn't it enough. The mean guy shouts back that the other guy stepped on his foot and it really hurts. The scared guy apologizes again. The mean guy wants to know who Akai is. With a scary face, Akai tell him his name. The two mean guys are frightened and run off. The scared guy is dazzled and calls out to Akai, "aniki, aniki" (slang for big brother). Akai responds that he's not his big brother. The guy says it's a spirit/mind thing and he asks Akai if it's alright to call him that. He profusely thanks Akai for saving him. He tells Akai to let him know if there's anything that he can do to help. Akai tells him that he does have something to ask. They go to the roof to talk. The guy tells Akai that he's popular, getting a confession. Akai says that he's not and he's troubled about how to respond. The guy asks if Akai likes Saki but Akai isn't sure what to say. The guy tells Akai it's not good for a guy to be puzzled and he should just say, "I love you!" and give her a big hug. With his arms crossed, Akai looks thoughtful as he thinks "I love you, huh." He sees Saki talking to classmates, smiling, and helping others out. He feels that Saki is a good person. He overhears a girl asking Saki if she used to by a delinquent. Saki laughs and says, "yes" but the girl doesn't believe her. Akai knows that because of him, strange rumors like that were said about her, but it doesn't bother her. Back in the classroom, it's English lesson. As the class drones on, Saki starts to look a little sleepy. Then all of a sudden, she nods off and hits her head on the desk. Startled, she sits up with a gasp. The teacher smirks at her and tells her, good morning. Embarrassed, Saki touches her head and giggles. She then turns her head, sees Akai looking at her, and is mortified. Akai thinks that Saki is also very interesting.
Saki and Akai are sitting on the park bench again. Saki is covering her face and saying that she's so embarrassed. Akai tells her not to worry about it. Saki replies back that she's worried about showing something like that in front of the person she loves. She gasps and realizes that she just said "the person I love". She hangs her head in embarrassment. Akai is speechless at first but then asks her why she says that about him. Saki looks surprised. She explains that she's slow, simple, and has no merits, and she doesn't really like herself that way so she's been wanting to change. So she boldly confessed to Aoyama, only to be rejected. At that time, if Akai hadn't encouraged her, she feels that she would have lost more confidence in herself and would have hated herself more. But thanks to him, she started to fall in love with him and because she could tell him properly, she's now starting to like herself. Saki smiles as she tells Akai that because of him, she was able to change and that's why she loves him. Akai remains silently as he looks at her, so Saki gets a little flustered and says, "...I guess", "Uh...", and "Ha ha". Akai starts to say her name, but Saki jumps up, tells him that she's going to play with the kids, and dashes off. Akai watches her and thinks that he really didn't do anything special, but he also realizes that Saki really is happy being with him.
At school, Sayama (the guy who Akai saved) calls out "Aniki!" to Akai. Akai reminds Sayama that he is not Sayama's big brother. Sayama wants to know if things are going well with Saki. He asks Akai if he told her "I love you!" and hugged her yet. Akai responds that he hasn't yet, but he knows the reason why she loves him and it was very appreciated. Sayama thinks that Akai is unexpectedly earnest. Akai wonders about the words, "I love you." There was a girl who he was kind of interested in, but he made her cry just by looking at her. He turns and stares at Saki. She notices and gives him a big smile. He continues thinking about the words, "I love you." as they walk together to pick up the kids. At the preschool, Kokona has tears in her eyes and looks very upset. Akai asks her what's wrong and the teacher answers that she got into an argument with a friend. Kokona cries out that Mari-chan wouldn't lend her a picture book. Akai then asks what does she want to do about the park and Kokona shouts that she just wants to go home. Masaki is surprised. Saki tells him to just endure it for today. Saki and Masaki tell Kokona goodbye, but Kokona is too upset to respond. Akai, carrying Kokona, looks over at them and apologizes. Saki smiles and tells him, "It's okay, see you tomorrow." Masaki is a little upset. As Saki and Masaki walk home, Saki mentions that it's unusual to see Kokona crying since she's always so happy. Then Saki's phone rings. It's her mom asking if Saki can buy shoyu. Saki tells her that they will pick it up and return home soon. Akai, still carrying Kokona, suggests that they go and buy some ice cream, but Kokona doesn't want any. Kokona has her head on Akai's shoulder and looks glum. Akai thinks that the words "I love you" and Kokona being an angel are not the same. He realizes that it's not the time to be thinking about that.
Suddenly he hears someone running towards them. It's Saki and she looks frantic. When he asks her what's wrong, she wants to know if he's seen Masaki. He hasn't and wonders where Masaki went. Saki says that Masaki disappeared while she was talking on the phone. Akai asks if Masaki went home already but Saki says that he didn't because she called their house. Akai asks about the park, but Saki says that he didn't go there either. Worried, Saki starts to cry and wonders what to do. Akai tells her to remain calm because Masaki couldn't have gone that far yet. He puts Kokona down and says that he will help search. Kokona says that she will too. They call Masaki's name, but no answer. They can't find him anywhere. Saki sighs and starts to cry. Akai looks concerned and begins to reach out to comfort her. But then, suddenly Masaki appears and is happy to see Kokona. Saki shouts his name. Confused, Masaki replies, "Yes, that's me. My name is Masaki." Saki angrily tries to ask him where he went, but Masaki turns to Kokona and gives her a flower. Kokona is happy to receive it. Akai squats down to ask Masaki what he was doing because Saki was really worried about him. Masaki answers that he was looking for a flower. He says that he thought about giving one to Kokona since she was crying. Saki thumps him on the head and yells at him that he should have told her about it first. Masaki replied that she was on the phone though. Saki shouts back that they could have gone home to get flowers (they own a flower shop) after she was done talking. Shocked, Masaki realizes that they have a lot of flowers at home. Saki calls him an idiot a few times as she calls home. Masaki looks up at her with tears in his eyes. He turns to Akai and explains that he was just trying to make Kokona happy since she was crying. He says that when they gave her flowers on her birthday, she was so happy so he wanted to make her smile again. Akai pats Masaki on the head and thanks him. Akai tells Masaki that Saki is just upset because she's worried and Masaki didn't do anything wrong. Masaki asks him if that's really true and Akai replies that it's Masaki's "I love you", so cherish it (T/N: he probably means that Saki is so upset because she loves Masaki). Masaki wants to know what is "I love you". Akai replies that he really doesn't know either but... just now he feels that he's starting to understand a little, as he looks over at Saki who's talking on the phone.
Sitting on the park bench, Saki looks down in embarrassment and apologizes for Masaki causing such a fuss. Akai tells her it's okay and that Masaki is a good kid. Saki says no and that she also really caused a fuss. Akai says "Not really...". Then Saki exclaims, "Oh...." and startles Akai. She rummages through her bag, saying that it's just the right time even though it wasn't a good thing that happened earlier. Akai wants to know what's going on so suddenly. She pulls out a decorative sack and tells him that today is Valentine's Day so she hopes he will accept it. Surprised, Akai says, "chocolate." He looks at her and asks if it's okay to receive it. Embarrassed she says that if he's not opposed to it... He tells her that he accepts and thanks her. Saki asks if he likes sweet things and he says that he likes them better than sour things. Saki laughs and says "that's good". Akai looks over at her. He thinks that towards the person who's always by his side smiling for him, he wants to protect her happy face. He reaches out and grabs Saki, giving her a big hug. Saki is stunned. Akai feels that's his "I love you" and he tells her, "I love you" as Saki thinks, "What!!?"
