This chapter begins with Haru’s narration: “My birthday is in March and Wao’s birthday is in April, so the family decided to celebrate both our birthdays right in the middle.” Shima and Wao say Happy Birthday to each other at their party. Shima thinks to herself “It’s weird how easily we adjusted to this whole family thing.” Shima’s mother is doing the laundry when she calls Shima over and whispers to her “Do you care if your laundry gets mixed up with your fathers?” and Shima replies “I don’t really care, but I’ve always done my own laundry so I can just do my own.” Wao’s mother smiles and tells her “Okay, but just let me know if you ever want me to do it for you!”
Wao is knocking on Shima’s door and asks if he can come in. Shima replies yes and he comes in and asks her for her phone number. Shima is surprised that he has a phone and Wao replies “Yeah, they randomly got it for me.” Shima is excited and tells him that she will text him. Wao replies “It was never inconvenient not having a phone though.” Shima remembers that he used to use Gen’s phone and begins to ask him about the fight that they had on the day of the move, but Wao interrupts her and asks “Don't you get confused about what to call them?” and Shima is confused so Wao clarifies by saying “I mean my mom. Like what should you call her? Maybe mother? But you call your mother that so I think that would be weird. Maybe Mama? Or what do I call your Dad? I get embarrassed with I call him dad.” The two are laughing and thinking when Shima decides that they should call them by their names, Yasuhiro-san and Yukari-san, but they still get embrassed and decide against it.
Haruka rings the doorbell of their house and comes in. Shima is happy to see her and asks what she is doing there and Haruka replies, “I came to hang out! I was bored. Is Wao home?” and Shima replies “Yup he’s here” and Haruka turns around to leave. Shima tries to stop her and asks her why, Haruka replies “Cause I think if I saw Wao right now, I would make a really weird face.” Right at that moment Wao walks in and calls out to her “Oh, Kunishige Haruka.”
The scene changes to Shima’s dad talking to himself “Sumire, right now I am so unbelievably happy. I used to live alone and now this house has my wife, my daughter, my son, my dog, and today a friend has even come over. It’s spring. It’s really spring. It’s really spring in this world.” Wao’s mother knocks on the door and walks into the room and asks “Can we have udon noodles for lunch today?” Shima’s dad is embrassing.
Haruka, Wao, and Shima are now sitting in Shima’s room. Haruka is saying “At out school we don’t switch classes for all three years, so you guys are together both at school and at home. I bet that’s fun. Are you guys happy? You guys aren’t necessarily siblings though, just living together, but still it must be really fun.” Wao then asks “Kunishige-san what are you doing here?” and she answers “I just wanted to come see the siblings.” And he makes fun of her by saying “Gee, you must not have anything to do even though school starts tomorrow.” Haruka hugs Shima saying “Your brother has a cute face but he says some mean things!” Haruka then asks Wao “Do you come into this room whenever you want? If so, you guys should just start dating now.” Shima becomes embarrassed and wonders to herself “Why is she saying this now!? Wao’s probably a difficult person” and she thinks about Gen and Gen’s sister. Wao’s mother comes in calling them all down for lunch.
The five of them eat lunch together and Shima thinks to herself “Our whole family is peaceful.” Shima walks Haruka home and asks about Gen. Haruka replies saying “Until now, even though the two of them have always been in the same class as me I always thought that they were on a stage or something. But now, talking to Wao and eating lunch with makes me feel like Wao has gotten off the stage and gotten to the same level as me.” Shima comments saying “Then I guess Gen will get on your level too.” To this Haruka falls over and whines “I don’t know, I tried so hard to bring him to my level, but now I’m too scared to see him at school tomorrow. I really don’t want to see him tomorrow.” The two part and they both walk home.
Wao is calling Gen’s sister and telling her that he got a cell phone and to tell Gen that too because he did not pick up when he called earlier.
The next morning is the first day of school and Wao and Shima leave for school. Shima asks why Gen is not with them and Wao just turns around and smiles. The two arrive at school and listen to the morning announcements and get called over by their teacher. The teacher invites them into his office and they talk about their new family and he wishes them well.
In the class while Wao and Shima were in their teachers office, the girls were discussing Wao and Shima’s new living arrangement. They are express jealousy and imagine what it would be like to live with Wao. They also question why Gen and Wao are not together like they usually always are.
Shima is narrating and thinking to herself about this new school year. She is thinking about all of the rumors that have been going around the school about her and Wao. She also thinks about Gen and how everyone at school seems to know that Wao and Gen have not been speaking to each other.
Haruka approaches Gen and asks if he would like to eat some of her lunch. He rudely tells her that she is being annoying. Haruka calls him a child. Gen abruptly stands up and Haruka falls to the ground in fear. Gen leaves to go to the bathroom and brushes past Wao without a word. Shima feels the tension between them and wonders to herself what exactly happened.
Back at home, Shima and Wao sit in Wao’s room and talk. Wao tells Shima that even though he gave his phone number to Gen, he hasn’t received a single call. Shima yells and asks “Wait What! What happened? Was it on the day of the move? Because you moved in with my family?” Wao answers “No, but I guess that is partially what started it.” Shima becomes sad and remembers how close the two were and Wao adds, “We probably can’t return to the way we were.”
At school the next day, there is a music lesson but Shima is not concentrating and thinking about Gen and Wao. She wants them to be friends again. After the lesson, a bunch of first years crows outside the class to catch a glimpse at Wao and Gen promptly pushes them away. Gen gets angry at the people in his class laughing at him pushing the girl away and goes to punch them, but Shima tries to stop but instead gets punched in the nose herself. She gets a bloody nose and gets treated in the nurse’s office by Wao. Gen’s sister rushes into the nurse’s office and sits down on a bed to talk. She asks if Wao and Gen recently had a fight, and when Wao answers yes she begins to talk about Gen, “I knew it, he’s been acting strange recently. You know to him you’re kind of like a trauma. He’s been in love with you all this time. Almost like how a little kid loves a treasure or some precious teddy bear he’s always had. He probably also wants to protect you and he’s been trying his hardest to do that.”
After school Shima is walking outside and thinking to herself when she sees Gen sitting on a park bench. She asks Gen to apologize and he mutters the beginnings of several before she tells him it’s okay. Shima tells him, “Haruka didn’t mean anything she said before and she was just in a rush to get you on the same level as her. She really regrets it too.” Gen smiles to himself and replies back “So..? I don't even understand.” Shima begins to think about Wao and gets angry at Gen for being so lame about this. She hits Gen across the back and Gen yells at her, “What are you doing?” Shima is angry and yelling, “Do what you want! You’re the one whose separating yourself from Wao. Don’t blame it on anyone else!” Shima abruptly turns around to leave but turns around after remembering that molesters come out at night and warns him against it. The sign behind Gen also warns against the Molesters and Shima walks away thinking about what they all need and decide it must be Mozart (they were learning about Mozart in music class).
Wao is knocking on Shima’s door and asks if he can come in. Shima replies yes and he comes in and asks her for her phone number. Shima is surprised that he has a phone and Wao replies “Yeah, they randomly got it for me.” Shima is excited and tells him that she will text him.
