Principle Chapter 10 Summary
The chapter begins with Shima waking up to the sound music and thinking that she has overslept. He goes downstairs and sees that it is Wao playing the piano. Wao notices her and asks if he woke her up. She laughs and tells him to keep on playing and asks where their parents went. He answers that they went to the department store and asks if she wants to play too and she declines. Shima asks if Wao was playing Mozart and he answers no, Chopin. Shima stands next to Wao and listens to him play, but she is thinking of the music teacher or Gen’s older sister.
Gen’s sister is calling for Gen and tells him they are going to Shima’s house. He asks why and she replies that she is bringing over souvenirs from their trip to France, also as an apology to when Gen hurt Shima. The two set off and walk to Shima’s house. The two continue to talk about when Gen hurt Shima and how they will apologize. Gen suddenly drops the bag and takes out the gift for Shima and leaves the apologizing to her.
Gen’s sister gets to Shima’s house. She is apologizing to Shima and Wao is asking what she would like to drink. Gen’s sister begins to pass out the souvenirs but there is an awkward moment when Shima realizes there is no gift for her. Gen’s sister then begins to explain that Gen took the gift, when there is a message from Gen on Shima’s phone. It is a picture of the gift for Shima, a small teacup, but Gen is using it to put rice and spicy Japanese flavoring on top. Shima and Wao stare at the screen and laugh when Shima’s stomach growls. Gen’s sister volunteers to make something for the two. Gen is washing Shima’s cup, and looking in his sister’s room.
Shima is thinking to herself about how the day feels gloomier now and she doesn’t think it’s because of what Gen did. Wao receives a text from Gen about the pictures that he had sent. Shima is thinking to herself again about how far away Wao feels from her even though he is so close. She really wants to ask him how he could like Gen’s sister so much. Wao interrupts Shima’s thoughts by asking if she would like to go to Gen’s tomorrow. Shima happily agrees and their parents come home.
Gen’s sister is drinking a cup of tea in the middle of the night when their mother walks into the room. They both drink tea together and discuss the arranged marriage that her mother wants her to have. Wao’s sister is staring into space and looking at herself in the mirror.
Shima and Wao ring on Gen’s doorbell and say good morning to him. They begin to talk but Gen swiftly walks ahead of them and Wao kicks a rock at his feet. Wao tells him that he still wants to be his friend and everything he told him is the truth. Gen turns around and asks if he wants to see the picture of the arranged marriage partner for his sister, which causes Wao to pick up a huge brick and attempt to throw it at Gen. Wao then quickly runs away.
Shima is now telling Haruka the story. Wao is sitting with his head down on a desk. Shima is telling Haruka that seeing Wao angry was very scary.
Haruka walks over to Wao and begins to talk to him. She is telling him that she does not really like him. She is saying that he is always smiling and being nice and everyone seems to like him, but Gen seems to be a lot more pure than him and that in colors Gen would be white and Wao would be black. She then adds that he’s probably never been talked to this way. Wao then looks up and tells Haruka that he feels that they could be friends.
Gen calls Wao out in the hallway. They try to figure out where in the school to go. They try to go up to the attic but it is locked. They sit in silence until Gen says we’re acting really stupid and Wao answers nope, just you. Shima and Haruka are listening in the lower steps. Wao tells Gen to widen her world a little bit, and Gen asnwers that Wao should widen his world and like other girls. Wao answers that Gen’s sister is the only girl and that he doesn't care if nobody else understands it. Gen asks what Wao will do about this arranged marriage, and asks if he’ll cry and stop her again. Wao answers that she can do as she likes. Haruka is surprised that Wao likes Gen’s sister. They talk some more and make up.
That night Shima is watching the stars when Wao walks onto the balcony. They talk about Gen and how they have made up. Shima is happy for them but she remembers how Wao was talking about Gen’s sister and becomes sad.
