Chapter 32:
“So this is what happens when ‘the string of nervousness’ breaks… I fall deeper and deeper… is this Yamato’s smell? It feels good. It’s okay right? I already did what I had to do… I hate being looked at or having attention on me. I don’t want to be looked at, or stand in front of people, nor talk to anyone. I want the time to stop…”
Mei awakens from hearing Yamato’s call. Mei passed out from a fever. The contest is over and the students are voting while Mei recovers. In about 40 minutes, the contestants had to go back on stage to hear the results. Mei thinks: “oh it’s not over yet…” She reassures everyone that she’s fine and she will definitely go back on stage.
Aiko explains how Yamato’s face turned blue seeing Mei pass out. He ran off the stage carrying her to the nurse’s office. Some of his fans were really upset to see that; being reminded that their dating. Mei thinks: “oh that’s why it smelled like him…”
The results are out and the contestants are back on stage. The guys get called out first. Mei cannot help but to pray that Yamato doesn’t take the first place. Of course, he wins and Kai takes second place. Next are the girls. Mei is on stage, looking down thinking “Please don’t look at me; I don’t have a confident face right now.” Now that Yamato won, her need to win increased, but she doesn’t have the confident smile like the other girls. The 5th place is called, it’s not Mei. The 4th place is called, and it’s still not Mei. She looks from side to side; “What? What? Maybe I can…” Now there are three contestants left; Mei, Aiko, and Megumi. The 3rd place was Mei. She starts to cry at the result. She is happy to have come so far, but her dream ended halfway. Aiko was 2nd and Megumi took the grand prize.
Asami and Kai are eating with Mei to cheer her up. She apologizes to them for not winning after all the help they gave her. Yamato takes her to a walk later. Everyone stares as the couple walks down, especially because they’re the only one’s not wearing a uniform. They two get bags full of food from fans working at the food stands. They sit down to eat but Mei is still gloomy. She explains that winning 3rd or 2nd place doesn’t mean anything to her unless she takes 1st. When Megumi entered the contest, she knew that she was in trouble, but she entered to win. Megumi liked Yamato in the past. Now that Megumi won, how can Mei stay calm when she knows that as the prize of the contest, Megumi will go on a date with her boyfriend? Yamato puts his plate down. “What can I do for Mei? I like Mei, but at this circumstance, what should I and what can I do to make you understand?” Mei kisses him. She doesn’t want him to say that. It’s not his fault, nobody did wrong. She just doesn’t want him to fall for Megumi. She can’t stop feeling impatient. Right now, if Mei doesn’t see Yamato’s innocent love and his facial expressions that only she knows of, she cannot relax. Her heart continues to hurt and she wants to feel him more. She can’t help but to think that maybe she wouldn’t feel this way if she had already slept with him. Her mind becomes corrupt because she knows that there are parts about Yamato she doesn’t know yet. Then why not cross the line? it’s easy. They stop making out now. Mei stops herself. She knows that she shouldn’t do something like this to test Yamato. But if she can’t do it so easily, then maybe it means that she’s not ready yet. Mei also knows that she doesn’t want to do it with Yamato because she feels rushed or any other impatient feelings. “How can you have good sex with a problem in front of you?”
The next day: Two girls came to thank Mei for her bravery the day of the contest. They were amazed at how much she changed and how brave she was to get on stage. Since the two girls are similar to Mei in terms of not being noticed, they were encouraged to try harder to change. Mei also read the comments on the voting paper. On other contestant’s papers, most people wrote a word or two about why they voted for that person. In Mei’s case, people wrote sentences and actual reasons. She was glad that she entered the contest and at least tried to win.
Later, Megumi came to talk to Mei about the date. Megumi wanted to make sure with Mei if it’s really okay. Megumi offered to cancel the date prize because it’s crazy that Mei’s boyfriend has to go on a date with someone else. Mei declines the offer, saying that it’s no problem for Megumi to go on a date with Yamato. Megumi: “Okay, because I was on my way to see Yamato to plan for the date.”
