Chapter 30:
Summer vacation is now over in the story. It’s now September, which means that Mei only has one month left to prepare for the contest that’s taking place in October. School’s annual festival is also on the same date as the contest. Mei and Asami’s class are doing a maid café where both guys and girls are wearing a uniform. One third of the students are taking the place of the waiter, and the other two thirds are responsible for owarai show. For those who enter the contest, like Mei, they do not need to participate in the café, which means that Mei doesn’t have to wear the maid uniform so she’s happy. But every time Mei thinks about the day of the contest, where she’s standing on the stage with the other contestants, she get’s anxious. Mei still feels that she’s not pretty enough to be on stage with other girls such as Megumi and Aiko. As Mei ponders about this, she is walking with Asami (I think in school) and their talking about the festival. Asami was chosen to go shopping for the materials needed for the café, and Mei decided to help her out.
So Mei and Asami go on a “date” shopping around. Since Mei is so reliable, they finish quickly and go to a nearby café for tea and cake. As they eat their cake and drink tea, Asami notices that Mei is sighing again. Mei can’t stop worrying about the contest. Mei tells Asami that the other day, Yamato and his older brother Daichi took Mei shopping to pick the clothes for the contest and how Daichi is going to do Mei’s hair and makeup on the day of the contest. Asami was really surprised to hear this, saying that she was rejected by Daichi before. Asami explains that long time ago, she visited Daichi’s hair salon seeking for a “new look.” That day, when Daichi asked for the kind of hair style she wants, Asami replied by mentioning the names of her favorite fashion models. Hearing them, Daichi laughed while saying “you have no characteristics. Even if you imitate that person’s hair style, it’s not like you can become her. If you already know a specific ‘look’ that you want, then I don’t need to be the one cutting your hair. I wanted to her your ‘wishes’ instead of ‘like that person’…” Asami says that his face is her obvious type, but she’s not good with his personality. But if Daichi agreed to help out Mei, it must mean that her desperateness had reached him. Mei replies “… Someone like me shouldn’t even enter the contest…” Asami then puts a cake in Mei’s mouth to shut her up, telling Mei that she’s pretty.
After tea time was over, Asami decided to take Mei for another round of shopping for girls necessaries. After spending few hours together, Mei feels that she caught back on the years of ‘being a girl.’ The girl inside of Mei is “maturing.”
Meanwhile, Megumi visits her hair stylist and asked him to do hair and make up for her on the day of the contest. The stylist agrees to help immediately, but says “wouldn’t this be easy for you?” Megumi replies that she doesn’t plan to lose and doesn’t think she will either. But this is different from before, she wants to truly win the contest. Megumi has a disadvantage. And since someone important (Yamato) is the prize of the contest, Mei will obviously work hard to win as well. Megumi doesn’t want to lose. The stylist notice how much the contest means to Megumi as she describes him the circumstances while blushing. Even if she is at a disadvantage, Megumi has spent many years working to improve herself as a “girl.” She knows how to make herself look cute and pretty. During her job, Megumi is asked by her manager is she wants to include a story in her magazine about the school’s contest. Megumi replies no explaining that it might cause her to win in an unfair way; which will make all the effort she put into winning the contest for nothing.
While Megumi was relaxing at home, she gets a call from Momo-chan asking if Megumi was free this weekend. Momo-chan planned to go to karwaoke with Aya and Nori and they wanted Momo-chan to invite Megumi. Megumi immediately replies that she’s not going. Megumi doesn’t want fake friends anymore. Momo-chan mentions that Aya and Nori wanted to apologize about it but Megumi says that if they really wanted to apologize, then they shouldn’t be saying this through Momo-chan. Both Aya and Nori knows Megumi’s phone number, so they can call for themselves. After saying this, Megumi realized that this isn’t Momo-chan’s fault, so she apologized and thanked her for the invite but Megumi doesn’t want to think about anything until the contest is over. After that, Megumi will go talk to Aya and Nori herself to deal with the past conflict.
Now back to Mei. Mei came home from a long day and looks at beauty products she bought that Asami suggested. It’s the first time that she bought these products before and she’s not sure if she can use them the correct way. As she gets called to dinner, and sees the food in front of her, Mei wants to eat. But she hears Asami’s voice telling her that oily foods will cause skin irritation and breakouts. So Mei settles down for a salad and miso soup. After that, Mei weighs herself and is shocked to see her BMI, which made her think of Megumi who probably has no fat on her body. Mei now starts to tear up as she compared inexperienced self to Megumi who has been spending her years as a fashion model and constantly improving herself (beauty-wise.) But Mei pulls herself together and goes jogging. While running, she runs into Kai who is jogging as well. They both do not want to be in the contest, but since they already entered, it cannot be helped. They are going to do their best for the time being. When Mei gets home, she takes a bath, exercise, research, and then tries on the facial mask she bought earlier.
The next week, Asami, Yamato, and Aiko immediately notices the difference in Mei’s face. Her face is whiter, softer, and smaller according to Asami. Yamato comments that his excited for the result of the contest. All the efforts put into the contest are all for Yamato. The contest is in three days.
