Chapter 31: TEARS AND SEPARATION
Narration: “I thought this smiling face would last forever…”
Keisuke and Mayu are playing on the snow and they hear music, so Keisuke says that it’ the 5 o’clock music and they should head home, and she says she wants to bring a snow rabbit with her. Then they notice Nina, walking there like a ghost, and ask her where was she because they wanted to play with her. As they come closer, they notice she’s upset and crying. She remembers how Miyake told her that it is painful for him and bursts into tears thinking, “Miyake, how much did I hurt you?.” Mayu hugs her to comfort her, but Nina is devastated because she realized she was egocentric and insensible, but Miyake still, with a smile, broke up with her.
The scene changes to Miyake and his friends, who are shocked to hear that they broke up. His friend says that when he called him at this hour to talk they thought Miyake will be telling him about various things Nina and he had done together, but this is a surprise. Then other friend asks him if he maybe broke up too fast because she put Kyou senpai before their promise, but Kyou was sick, and for him a girl that leaves a sick person alone is bad. Miyake agrees with him, but explains that when she said she couldn’t leave him (Kyou), he asked her if it really must be only her that has to be with him because she could have called his parents or girlfriend, and if she simply said, “That’s not possible” he would have been glad, but instead, she made a face like she was going to cry. He continues saying how she was always in his mind and when they finally became a couple he was so happy and thought to himself that maybe they were going steady but it wasn’t enough. He says that at that moment he thought he could never compete against Kyou and figured it’s impossible. His friends look at him sadly, but he comments that this was unrequited love so he will return to how it used to be. His friend with teary eyes say to him that no matter what, they’re his friends so he can cry to them and, as they hug him, they tell him that it was the right thing to break up with her and that they should be drinking tonight together. Miyake says that he’s fine already, but his facial expression reveals how he really feels.
We see Kyou walking out on the balcony and notices the blackboard with the same stuff written before and looks somehow bothered by it, but then Keisuke runs in from Nina’s balcony and Kyo asks him if he came for her. Then he knocks at the balcony window and she indifferently asks him what the matter was. He answers that Keisuke said that she was crying. She says she’s fine now, but then he asks her if it was his fault. He continues saying how he can’t remember at all what happened when he was sick, and then she remembers how he was telling to her not to go, but she tells him that it’s fine because she saw him (Miyake) properly today. As she continues saying that it’s fine, she starts crying again, and he grabs her arm saying, “It’s not fine…is it?“ She demands him to let her go, but he yells that he can’t let her go while she’s crying because it’s his fault.
The scene jumps back to Keisuke who was yelling at Kyou that they (Kyou and Nina) are still in an argument and he made her cry and the scene ends. They are interrupted by someone yelling that it’s dinner time, so she tells him he’s hurting her. He apologizes and thanks her for yesterday and comments that he was happy. She enters her room, but obviously she's not happy at all. The next morning her mom tries to wake her up saying that Christmas already passed so she should start studying now. She also asks her if she can go and buy a workbook, so Nina goes to the store. When she arrives, she seems confused at which one to buy because she can’t concentrate on anything. Suddenly, she sees Yuiko. Yuiko comments on how they often meet and asks her if she is searching for a workbook because she can recommend some to her. Nina recalls her words, “You really didn't notice?” Then Yuiko tells her that somehow she has a look on her face like she wants to ask her something and asks her if she was told by Kyousuke that he likes her (Nina). Nina looks shocked. Then she, with the intent to mock Kyousuke, asks Nina if he instead told her something like- “ I can’t say it right now.”
Meanwhile, Miyake and his friends are on their way home while his friends tell him that if he feels lonely he can call them anytime.
Miyake jokes with them saying that they shouldn’t be acting like his older brother. The chapter ends with Miyake noticing Kyou coming towards him.
